VIDEO VILLAGE

The Highland Video Village was created as part of Seeing Spartanburg in a New Light, a public art project funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies in an effort to improve public safety. The initiative brought nine temporary art installations to public spaces in ten neighborhoods throughout the city of Spartanburg. The project was a partnership between the City of Spartanburg Police and Community Relations departments, internationally renowned light and digital media artist Erwin Redl, the Chapman Cultural Center, and neighborhood associations in the city of Spartanburg.

White Elephant Enterprises not only covered the 2 year journey, but our team co-Directed one of the installations titled, Video Village. The overview and detail about the project is below. In 2016, White Elephant Enterprises collaborated with The Highland Neighborhood Association, The Bethlehem Center, Hub-ology, and 40 other partners to design and implement the Video Village public art installation. Video Village was one of the 9 installations in the Seeing Spartanburg in a New Light project supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The project required a massive effort in video production, technology innovation, and unconventional site construction to make the art installation a reality. At the end of the 6-month public display of Video Village, White Elephant worked with our partners at Hub-ology to convert all of the equipment used in the project into "Innovation Village" - a computer lab for children at The Bethlem Center in Highland. This video outlines how the process evolved and how it led to the Innovation Village at The Bethlehem Center.
